Philippines - Extending the Peace of Christ

On a humid September day in Davao City, Philippines, Daniel and Joji Pantoja meet for peace talks with Military, Muslim, and Indigenous leaders. They are hoping for an opportunity to share their Anabaptist perspective on peace. Violent conflict among Muslims, Christians, and Indigenous peoples has been brewing here for decades, leading to protests, armed rebel groups, riots, and forceful military confrontations. Like all conflicts, this one is complex. But the Pantojas are encouraged to discover people interested in pursuing peace represented in each of the conflicted groups.

Together, the Pantojas are pioneering the development of Peace Building Teams and forming leaders from among the local people. Their work is making a difference. There is the growing trust of a local religious leader. A military officer has subsequently met Daniel informally over coffee. Even military officers have received Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution training.

“The journey continues,” writes Daniel.
