An Invitation: We are “Global” People...

Our lives are inter-twined with the destiny of others.

This is also true of our church. Many around the world have encountered the gospel of Jesus and have committed themselves to it. Sometimes we have been privileged to be a ‘mid-wife’ in this encounter.

One hundred years ago, 99% of Mennonites lived in Europe and North America. Today, Mennonites in other parts of the world outnumber us two-to-one. Our global church continues to grow rapidly.

When the early church grew rapidly, it needed to adjust its ministries. Luke explains one of these changes succinctly:

“The Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution.” (Acts 6:1).

The early church responded to its new reality; a growing church was a blessing. While European and North American Mennonites today are outnumbered two-to-one, the distribution of wealth among us is one-to-nine; 33% of the members (including us) control 90% of the wealth of our church family. Are some of our “widows” today being “neglected in the daily distribution?”

Through Mennonite Church Canada, our reach is extended in amazing ways. Through our participation in Mennonite World Conference, we work toward our hope that the “daily distribution” of wealth can be more equitable.

As we do so, the wisdom and commitment of other Christians enriches our understanding and inspires our witness. Please help strengthen the body of Christ with joy, celebration, and generosity. God is good. Thanks be to God.
