A New Generation of Korean Leaders

Will Loewen, an MC Canada Witness Worker serving in South Korea, tells of learning about the Korean concept of “han” from a Korean friend. Despite Korea’s current prosperity, most of the people there can remember more difficult times. The civil war left an indelible stain on the psyche of the nation, and brought great sorrow to Koreans.

“Han” roughly means sorrow and regret, but encapsulates much more. Koreans bring this with them when they pray. They pray for their han to be lifted. They pray for estranged family members. They praise God for bringing them out of poverty and strife, and ask for blessings upon those less fortunate. To pray for han to be lifted is to pray for peace for oneself, a peace that can be passed on to others.

Will and other Mennonite Church Canada Witness workers work with Anabaptist partners in South Korea to nurture individuals and churches who are seeking an Anabaptist/Mennonite approach to Christian peacemaking, discipleship, and community. The Korea Anabaptist Center (KAC) is an important resource for Korean churches. Through peace education, translating and publishing Anabaptist books, and speaking engagements, KAC staff nurture a new generation of Anabaptist churches in Jesus’ way of peace.
